Malham Smithy

The black smiths in the middle of Malham village

The Smithy lies in the middle of Malham Village, Malham Beck flows passed behind the Smithy and the The Buck Inn is directly opposite. See map below.

The historic Smithy in the beautiful village of Malham in the Yorkshire Dales was once the workplace of Bill Wild, famous for his metal working skills. The smithy was bequeathed to the parish church on his death and is now the workshop and gallery of David Crane who aims to bring to life past skills and fuse these with more modern techniques, creating a range of desirable objects to bring lasting pleasure to those owning them. David is joined by Annabelle Bradley who also comes to blacksmithing from other disciplines and shares David's desire to preserve the tradition of the smithy.

Both David and Annabelle will be using the advantage of a permanent workplace to build on existing skills and extend the range of services offered. David has already established a reputation working within the education and heritage fields and both he and Annabelle will welcome enquiries from local school groups as well as undertaking specific commissions.

An increasing range of handcrafted items from small souvenirs to larger sculptural pieces can be seen and are offered for sale at the smithy where visitors are always welcome, but please ring first if you are making a specific journey to avoid disappointment.

Rather than just using the space as a gallery, the small viewing area for visitors is being developed to contain information panels and changing displays reflecting local events and history. In this way it is hoped that local knowledge can be preserved and enhance to the overall heritage value of the area for the community and visitor alike. Information and display items from both individuals and groups are welcome.
