Malhamdale Environment Group (MEG)

The MALHAMDALE ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP was set up in 2019 to promote environmentally friendly activities within Malhamdale. Our activities to date are listed below and if you wish to get in touch, email our contact address: malhamdalevolunteers@gmail.com

The Malhamdale Environmental Group began in 2019 and is now a sub-group of Kirkby Malham Parish Council.

Our aim is to encourage environmentally friendly activities within the Dale and contribute towards Craven becoming zero carbon. In February 2020 Craven District Council launched is Climate Emergency Strategic Plan, and the group wholeheartedly supports this strategy.

The group is involved in contacting local landowners and encouraging those with small pockets of land to plant trees. In 2019, a series of walks around Malham took place to identify where more trees might be planted. As a result 500-600 trees have been planted in a various locations including Gordale Lane, Malham Raikes, Malham Beck Plantation, Atkinson’s Copse, and on private land. This work has been done thanks to the support of the National Trust, the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

The group is also working on developing a sensory garden in the grounds of Malham Chapel with the aim of making it a quiet place at the entrance to the village.

Each month the MEG group raises a different environmental issue through articles in the parish magazine. In the past these have included food and farming, environmentally friendly gardening, and how to reduce plastic. (Link to MEG Google Drive) Key issues such as travel and transport, flood management and renewable energy are discussed at meetings and recommendations are put to the relevant responsible bodies.

If you are a local resident and have a desire to combat climate change you are welcome to get involved:

  • Join the Whats App group where we share news and information.
  • Sign up as a volunteer to help out with practical activities.
  • Come along to our meetings to find out and share in the organising.

As a group we meet once a month usually on the last Thursday of the month. If you would like to attend please contact malhamdalevolunteers@gmail.com

Meetings include speakers on various issues and on-going business.
